a note about speculative work

At Vivid, we’ve always been a bit different, and we’ve always been proud of the way that we are sharper than most in our industry. From day one, we’ve taken an uncompromising approach that has protected our clients’ interests by removing unnecessary expense and red tape. These things would only serve to fundamentally undermine the connection between us and our clients.

This approach to our time, resources, and the quality of our work means that we do not engage in pre-emptive work (sometimes known as ‘speculative pitching’).

One of our fundamental tenets is to base our work on research. We think that it’s a good idea to hear the evidence before reaching a conclusion. Pre-emptive work denies you that benefit by requiring us to produce work before we have gathered the evidence to base that work on.

Establishing a mind-set ahead of research is an old engineering fallacy - that of jumping to the solution without understanding the problem. Pre-emptive work is an equal nonsense. We’d be confining ourselves, and that also means you, to a box before we’ve gathered the information which actually determines the work we will do for you. Issues such as direction, motivation, the mandatory must haves, the known unknowns: all the issues which actually inform a successful campaign are missing in any pre-emptive work. Jumping the gun rarely makes sense.

So we don’t do it.

You’ll find more than forty examples of our work on this website: we’d rather be judged on the work we’ve done for our clients than on some piece of speculative work. We want to see the evidence before coming to a verdict; we want to avoid jumping to a solution before we understand the problem.

This is the approach that brings value and effectiveness to our work together.

It works.
